Demolition Photographs at Habsburgstrasse 1, Zurich-Wipkingen
Recursive Demolition, Before and During
This past spring here in Wipkingen, several old residential building at Habsburgstrasse 1 were marked for new construction, and the owners let the current residents and/or local artists paint up the building. It was pretty neat, so I took a few photographs.
In late-July the demolition began, and on 29 July after returning from a hike, I noticed that the work had progressed to the last bit of the above building. I ran home, got my camera and took many photographs. One of the construction men was very unhappy about my presence and tried to insist that photographs were not allowed. "Nein, nein! Verbotten!" I left, snuck around the block, and continued to shoot from .

After a while, an older woman approached me and started quizzing me on what I was doing and why. Turns out, she was the mother of siblings that owned the property and were redeveloping it. They were apparently sensitive to any negative reactions and the current occupants were not happy to leave. All understandable.
Mildly ironic photograph, yes?
